Abjat sur Bandiat est situé dans le nord de la Dordogne au centre du Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin, à 300 m d'altitude, sur un piton qui s'étend en pénéplaine vers le sud pour rejoindre la vallée de la Dronne. La rivière qui traverse la commune s'appelle le Bandiat.
La commune d'Abjat compte 639 habitants.
Cette population se répartit sur plus de 39 villages, hameaux, moulins et lieux-dits.
Le Bandiat, qui traverse la commune,
est notre ruisseau. Il coule à nos pieds,
impétueux, moussant et rugissant au milieu
des rochers, des cascades et des écluses.
Même de nos jours, certains abords restent inaccessibles tant la pente y est raide et la végétation
dense et impénétrable. Dans son lit, de superbes
bancs de sable font quelquefois oublier, tout à côté, d'énormes trous de 2 à 3 mètres de profondeur.
Nous ne saurions trop recommander la prudence
à ce sujet.
Géologiquement, c'est le Limousin,
avec son sous-sol granitique, sa faune et ses futaies
de chênes et de châtaigniers. Au passage, admirez
les gravillons roses des carrières de la "Charelle".
Autrefois, la richesse du pays était constituée par
une multitude de forges établies le long du Bandiat.
On y trouve encore des scories et du mâchefer.
La monographie déjà citée indique "que le fer, travaillé, est lentement, pesamment, porté à Angoulême sur des charrettes à boeufs.
Edouard d'Angleterre envoyait dans son île, par Bordeaux, les fers des terres du Périgord ".

Suivre le GR4 en direction du Grand Golhier jusqu'à
l'embranchement GR4 route de Laulandie. Tourner à gauche pour traverser
le village de Laulandie. Prendre le sentier à droite de la patte
d'oie et 100m plus loin, celui situé à gauche. A 1,3km le
sentier passe entre une maison et un étang. A 2,5km couper la route
goudronnée pour prendre en face à 5m sur la gauche le chemin
qui descend vers Maumont sur 250m, puis tourner à droite (poteau
E.D.F) jusqu'à Masfrolet. Prendre la route à droite en haut
de la petite côte faire 250m, s'engager sur le chemin en face, continuer
jusqu'au GR4 que l'on suit en revenant au bourg.
Suivre l'itinéraire du circuit 1 jusqu'au
poteau E.D.F, et prendre à gauche. Couper la route goudronnée
en bifurquant sur la droite, puis sur la gauche en direction de Peyrat.
On traverse le Bandiat. 100m après les premières maisons,
tourner à gauche, 100m plus loin, couper la route pour suivre le
sentier qui descend jusqu'à la route D96, en passant par Petit
Peyrat. Couper la RD96 et prendre en face pour entrer dans le village
de Fargeas (Fontaine, Maisons Bourgeoises, Petite Vallée, départ
de la Légende " Les Cloches d'Abjat " après la
révolte de 1640). A 200m tourner à droite, 100m plus loin
à gauche et marcher sur 650m. Descendre le chemin à gauche
le long du bois, traverser la passerelle au dessus du Bandiat (Ancien
moulin non ouvert au public). Couper le ruisseau presque en face et tourner
à droite à 150m pour remonter vers le village de Puyzillout.
Ce sentier conduit au GR4 que l'on suit jusqu'au bourg.
Prendre le GR4 direction
Puyzillout pendant 300m. S'engager à gauche dans le chemin qui
monte, longe un petit étang et rejoint la route D87.
A gauche suivre celle-ci sur 250m et à droite la petite route goudronnée
en face qui tombe sur la D96. Continuer à droite pendant 700m,
puis s'engager dans le sentier qui conduit au village du Chatenet. Tourner
à gauche, 200m plus loin encore à gauche devant les blocs
de pierres et suivre toujours le sentier de droite. Passer entre les deux
étangs (en contre bas) et remonter vers Gros Puy (Fief d'avant
le XIIIe) en tournant à gauche sur la route. Reprendre la route
en direction de l'étang de l'Echasserie. A l'intersection, sur
votre droite après l'étang, dans le bois, vous découvrirez
des peintures " BOSC DAU LUBERON ". Retour au carrefour. Suivre
la RD87 sur 250m, tourner à droite dans le chemin. A 150m on rejoint
le GR4 que l'on suit jusqu'au bourg.
Suivre le GR4 direction
Puyzillout pendant 300m. S'engager à gauche dans le chemin qui
monte et rejoint la D87. Tourner à droite jusqu'à l'abris
d'élèves. Traverser la route, tourner à droite au
panneau indiquant 30. Suivre le chemin jusqu'à Rhins, tourner à
gauche. Continuer sur la route pendant 600m. Tourner à gauche dans
le bois. Suivre l'allée qui aboutit dans une clairière,
prendre à droite. Traverser le ruisseau " l'Estrade "
sur le petit pont de bois. Remonter par le sentier. Continuer dans le
chemin empierré, en longeant les étangs. Dans le village
de La Brousse tourner à droite ou à gauche.
Retour à Abjat. 100m avant l'entrée de la clairière, jusqu'à
l'entrée du chemin empierré.
Prendre direction MARVAL. Après la pépinière,
tournez à droite puis suivre le balisage N° 5 en traversant
les hameaux du Chatenet,
La Juvénie, Chabanas, Rhins, La Roderie. A l'ancien moulin de Chantecorps,
lieu idéal pour la pause casse-croûte, poursuivre vers Fargeas,
Peyrat, Masfrolet, La Blanchardie puis prendre le GR4 jusqu'à La
Mazeaurie. Se diriger ensuite vers Le Chatenet, Gros Puy jusqu'à
la D87. Tournez sur votre gauche ; à 50m prendre à droite
un chemin jusqu'au GR4 qui vous ramènera à Abjat.

Turn left to pass through the hamlet of Laulandie. As you leave the hamlet,
take the right-hand fork and 100 m further on, take the path to the left.
After 1,3 km, the path runs between a house and a lake.
After 2 ½ km, cross the tarmac road and follow the track opposite
(5 m to the left) which runs down for 250 m towards Maumont.
Then turn to the right (at the EDF pylon) until you reach Masfrolet. Follow
the right-hand road, on the top of the slope for 250 m, take the track opposite,
and continue until you reach the GR4, which you follow back into Abjat centre.
Cross the tarmac road and fork to the right then left towards Peyrat.
Cross the river Bandiat.
100 m after the first houses, turn left ; 100 m further on, cross the
road and follow the footpath which goes down to the D96, passing through
Petit Peyrat.
Cross over the D96 and opposite go into the hamlet of Fargeas. (Note:
the spring, some well-appointed houses, a little valley: origin of the
Legend of the Abjat Bells and the 1640 Rebellion).
After 200 m, turn right ; 100 m further on, turn left, then walk for 150
m. Go down the path to the left, beside the pine trees, and cross the
footbridge over the river Bandiat.
(The old Mill is not open for visiting). Cross the little stream, and bear
left ; 150 m further on, turn right to climb towards the hamlet of Puyzillout.
(On the way, paintings on trees can be seen here and there in the woods).
This path leads to the GR4 which you follow back to the town centre.
Bear left into a track which rises and runs beside a small lake ; you
come on the D87.
Follow the D87 left for 250 m, then right along the tarmac minor road
opposite which gives on to the D96.
Continue right for 700 m, then take the footpath bordered by little pine
trees which leads to the hamlet of Le Chatenet.
Turn left for a further 200 m, left again in, front of the boulders, and
continue following the right-hand footpath.
Pass between the two lakes (below the upper one) and climb up towards
Gros-Puy (pre-13th century feudal stronghold), turning to the left, following
the road.
Take the road towards the lake and l'Echasserie.
At the intersection, turn left.
Follow the D87 for 200 m ; turn right on to the path.
After 150 m, you come back on to the GR4 which you follow back to the town centre.
Bear left on the rising path and reach the D87. Turn right as far as the
children's bus shelter.
Cross the road and turn right at the 30 km/h signpost. Follow the track
as far as Rhins, and turn left. Continue along the road for 600 m. Turn
left into the woods ; follow the avenue which ends up in a clearing.**
Here can be seen some spectacular trees and boulders.
From the clearing, take the right-hand exit. Cross the "Estrade"
stream by the little wooden bridge.
Climb up along the stone-laid track, running beside the lakes.
In the hamlet "Labrousse", turn left or right. Return to Abjat.
100 m before the entry to the clearing, as far as the paintings, you are on Private Property.
Please do not disturb the animals.
as for as La Mazeaurie. Follow the route for
Le Chatenet, Gros Puy just to the D87. Turn left ;
in 50m a right turn to the GR4 will take you back to Abjat.
